Some Things Don't Change With Time

1960's

2020's

A lot of things have changed since I was in high school. Things cost more. Kids dress baring a lot more skin. Tattoos are no longer taboo. Girls' hairstyles are more natural where we wanted ours teased to the sky, which made me over 5’ tall (lol). There is more dangerous drug use, and sadly we hear of more deaths. I’m afraid there is more bullying, but it may just be brought out in the open more. People prefer to text than talk. But the human feelings we experience are still the same.

I have been watching as students and their parents post pictures of going to the prom on social media. I can remember the excitement of all the special occasions of high school and other milestones in life.

However, reflecting on these events, so much at the core of the individuals are the same. Boys are still afraid of rejection. Girls still wonder if anyone will ask them to be their date. They are both insecure as to whether people find them attractive. Are they too heavy or too thin? Both sexes still flirt with each other. Both experience love and heartbreak. There is also the pressure of final exams, the worry of enough credits for graduation, the excitement of prom, and graduation itself. The basics have not changed. I find some comfort in that.
