Adapting to Coronavirus Pandemic – Part II

My state is still honoring the “Shelter -In” status. I wrote about different ways it has affected lives and plans earlier this week.

My granddaughter is a 2020 Kosciusko High School Honor Graduate. I’m sure the feelings of expectation of being recognized for completing twelve years of school are the same for every generation. The joy and fear of leaving high school and welcoming the next chapter of their lives, where ever that may lead them.

The dream that has been shared with their class walking across the stage to receive their diplomas together. The hope and hard work that students and staff put into preparing their speeches. The anticipation as the last classmate walks back to his chair. Walking out orderly together and then throwing the caps in the air in celebration. All the pictures to be taken of classmates and teachers to recall for years to come.

After graduation, some parties are usually planned to celebrate individually with family and close friends.

Those are some of the things that have been shared among classes in past years.

In our home, we are dealing with the disappointment of not having a traditional high school graduation. This year is unprecedented. The first year that they can’t gather together for any of those things. It is a different time. This class will have a different story to tell their children and grandchildren.

Each school is making its own preparations to make the day as special as they can. Sadly, everyone knows that whatever they do, it won’t be the same.

This is what the class of 2020 needs to realize. Your graduation will be unique, just like your class and you are. You are making history for your school and nation. This class is resilient, special, and second to none. The graduation day may be somewhat disappointing, but the memories you share will last forever. Though you can’t stand together to receive your diplomas, you will share in the knowledge that each of you received your diploma in the same way.

In Kosciusko, graduates will not share the stage with other graduates. Instead, all of the focus and attention will shine on them individually. Each graduate will be the star in this monumental milestone in each of their lives.

Looking at the situation this way, they will receive the recognition and acclamation for their accomplishment in a honorable way. Isn't that what graduation really means?

May each of you complete your next goal, be safe, and be proud. We are all so proud and happy for each of you.

CONGRATULATIONS CLASS OF 2020!!
