Friday Night Lights

I will get back to my movie list later. I wanted to talk about football this time. I guess since it's my blog I can do that. Right?

I don't know if all high schools have had their first football game of the season, but it sure brings back a lot of memories for me. Friday Night Football is where it's at in Texas. It doesn't matter the size of the school.

BRAZOSPORT HIGH SCHOOL

I graduated from Brazosport High School, in Freeport , Texas. At that time it was the only high school in the Brazosport area. We were a force to be reckoned with. We had spirit. We were a football town. I loved this school and I loved their football games. The whole time I was in high school we had good teams and we had fun! We had a lot of traditions that have changed since I went there, but I'm sure they have added new. When I was a sophomore our mascot was a cannon. When we scored they would shoot the cannon off. They no longer have that. We also have the anchor for the "Shippers". We used to play "Dixie" to motivate our team. That has been banned everywhere also. Our football stadium is parallel to the Brazos River. It looks like a ship on the river. So cool. I was so blessed to enjoy the experience of attending this school and making the awesome memories I carry with me. We were more than a school, we were a family. We still are. A lot of us stay in contact through social media, our personal school website, and mini-reunions. At our 40th reunion, we decided a lot of us didn't want to wait 5 years to get together. We plan a mini-reunion every year. Several women meet once a month for lunch. I think some of the men do also. Pretty awesome I think. When I hear "Anchors Away", I want to stand and salute as I spell out E-X-P-O-R-T-E-R-S. Some things you keep in your heart forever.

ANGLETON HIGH SCHOOL

After graduation and marriage, we made our home in Angleton, Texas. Home of the Angleton Wildcats. We were avid supporters. We went to every game. Angleton was in a different class from Brazosport so I never had to feel guilty. We supported Angleton through my son's graduation in 1988. The only thing more exciting than football on Friday night is having a family member playing on the team. Angleton holds a very special place in my heart. Every memory is special. Since I left Texas they have built a beautiful new high school and football field. I still have Purple Pride every time I hear the fight song. I want to stand up and clap to it.

KOSCIUSKO HIGH SCHOOL

I moved to Kosciusko when I married in 1995. I found that Mississippi football is a big thing also. The spirit begins in kindergarten. Students are groomed to be Whippets from the first day of school. The football players even make a visit to the school and greet them as they arrive at the beginning of the season. I have had to make some adjustments. KHS doesn't stand up for kick-off and the band doesn't march off the field playing the fight song. One of the biggest adjustments is not standing for the fight song and clapping to it when it is played. All in all, I'm still proud to be a Whippet.
